building an app every day but idk how to code...

the power of prototyping with ai

for the past month, I’ve been building an app almost every single day using AI to bring whatever random idea I have to life.

mac apps, websites, python scripts, you name it.

to be clear: I am not a developer. I’ve never coded in my life.

and the apps that I’m “making” are extremely buggy.

but that’s the cool thing - they’re not meant for anyone else to use.

they’re prototypes.

and I think that’s where the future of creating stuff with AI lies.

for the longest time, human creativity was limited by the resources available to us.

our ideas were limitless, and sometimes we’d come up with (what at the moment seemed liked) the most fabulous, ground-breaking, and life-changing idea.

but that was it… just an idea.

the internet democratized learning, allowing anyone with enough dedication to learn the skills required to bring their idea to life.

and while this was great, it still meant having to dedicate months to perfecting a single skill before being able to take the next step in developing the idea.

scrappy prototypes were simply not possible without spending a lot of money, which meant many ideas ended up laying forgotten in that never-ending Google doc or to-do list.

I think AI has the potential to just be the next step in democratizing not only education, but the ability to execute on the education.

as code at the end of the day is no more than text, it was the first to fall prey to this democratization.

suddenly, anyone can “code with AI”.

it’s not true coding, and it will never replace real software engineers, but it allows for someone like me to be able to say, hey - what if we built a premiere pro extension that allows you to use our video modification AI models at sync.so, without ever having to leave premiere?

what if I build a mac app for visually dubbing an entire 40 min show that’s 500gb?

Xcode now also has AI built in, which is so cool - you can build native Mac and iPhone apps without much effort.

what if I make a chrome extension that allows me to save any music track from any site to a custom Spotify playlist of my choice, where I collect background music to use for my videos?

most of the time, I spend a day or two “vibe coding” these ideas until I have a solid working prototype, then usually end up abandoning it.

I recently started using Claude Code, and it’s surprisingly good - much better than OpenAI Codex and the other CLI-based coding assistants.

but sometimes the idea turns out to be actually useful.

after spending over a month vibe coding a fully working premiere pro sync. extension, I was able to convince our team that a premiere extension would actually be very useful.

I handed over the codebase to our product team, who rebuilt it in a few days using the same core concepts and functionality from the prototype, but mixed with their years of experience writing professional code (shoutout Sebastian the 🐐).

and honestly, I think prototyping can be helpful beyond code.

the core concept of prototyping puts the human first.

you think of the perfect idea, you use AI to imagine how it would work, you iterate on the idea, then if you’re really interested in continuing work on the idea, you find a co-founder or hire a professional to help you bring it to life.

I find the concept of having all the tools needed at my disposal to go from idea to prototype so exciting.

after using more than 5.37 billion tokens on Cursor in the past year, I’m excited to see what ideas I can bring to life through prototypes in the upcoming months.

btw - we’re looking for some beta testers for the premiere pro extension. if you’re interested, reply back to this email or drop a comment if you’re reading on web, and we’ll get you some credits + the extension to play around with :)
